Volunteer Accident Insurance Program

Through Volunteers Insurance Service Association, Incorporated (VIS) Insurance Plan, it is now possible to protect volunteers who provide valuable service to the organizations they serve. The Life Insurance Company of North America is the insurer. Association Insurance Management is the administrator of the VIS Insurance Plan. Summary of Coverages

Excess Accident Medical Coverage
This coverage will pay up to $25,000 for medical treatment, hospitalization, and licensed nursing care, required as the result of a covered accident. The insurance applies while the volunteer is traveling directly to and from, and while partiipating in volunteer related activities. Initial medical expenses must be incurred within 60 days of the accident. They are then covered for a one-year period following the accident.

Other than X-rays, dental care is covered up to $500 for accidental injury to natural teeth.

This coverage also provides up to $50.00 for repair or replacement of eyeglass frames and up to $50.00 for repair or replacement of eyeglass prescription lenses damaged as a result of an accident.

The maximum payment under this coverage, including dental and eyeglass expenses is $25,000.

This insurance does not cover expenses incurred which are eligible under full Medicare Coverage or any other group or franchise policy.

Accidental Death and Dismemberment
In addition to the accident medical coverage, the insurance company will pay the following benefits for death or loss of limb or sight, occurring within one year after the accident.

Only one amount, the largest to which you are entitled, is paid for all losses resulting from one accident.

Exclusions to Accident Insurance
The insurance does not apply to:

  • the cost of medical or surgical treatment or nursing service rendered by any person employed or retained by the VIS Member;
  • any loss caused by (1) abdominal hernia, however caused (2) bacterial infections, except pyogenic infections which occur with and through an accidental cut or wound (3) any form of sickness or disease (4) war or any act of war, whether declared or not
  • any Volunteer Firefighters, Police Officers, Rescue Squad members, or sports teams;
  • travel or flight in any vehicle or device for aerial navigation, including boarding and alighting therefrom,
    1. while being used for any test or experimental purpose; or
    2. while the Insured is operating, learning to operate or serving as a member of the crew thereof; or
    3. while being operated by or for or under the direction of any military authority, other than transport type aircraft operated by the Military Airlift Command (MAC) of the United States of America or the similar air transport service of any other country.

Legal Defense
The insurance company will defend any covered suit against the volunteer seeking damages on account of personal injury, bodily injury or property damage which exceeds any other valid or collectible insurance available to the volunteer.

THE ABOVE SUMMARY OF COVERAGE INTENDS SOLELY TO PROVIDE A GENERAL DESCRIPTION AND NEITHER INTENDS TO NOR CHANGES THE ACTUAL TERMS OF THE POLICY. THE INSURANCE COVERAGE APPLIES ONLY TO CERTAIN OCCURRENCES AND THERE ARE ADDITIONAL EXCLUSIONS.

VIS ADMINISTRATIVE GUIDELINES

  1. Coverage is provided to any volunteer registered on the volunteer organization's VIS Volunteer Roster.
  2. The policy year is July 1 to July 1.
  3. Sports clubs, volunteer police and firefighters are not eligible for VIS.
  4. VIS insurance is not a substitute for Public Liability, Professional Liability and Directors and Officers Liability insurance.

HOW TO FILE A CLAIM
If you have an accident which results in personal injury to yourself you can obtain a claim form from SRS. Follow the instructions carefully. When the form has been completed return it to SRS with your itemized bills. The Director of SRS will then sign the form and submit it to Association Insurance Management.
