Volunteer Insurance Program Request
The insurance policy that covers your department’s volunteers is being renewed. Risk Management is presently gathering the necessary documentation for those departments that want to participate.
The cost for this coverage for the year is $2.40 per volunteer per year. This coverage provides Excess Accident Medical Coverage up to $25,000, as well as coverage for Accidental Death and Dismemberment. Details on the coverage can be obtained from Risk Management.
In the event of an accident in a volunteer related activity, this coverage could be extremely valuable. Remember that worker’s compensation does not apply to our volunteers here at UNM.

How to File a Claim
If you have an accident which results in personal injury to yourself you can obtain a claim form from SRS. Follow the instructions carefully. When the form has been completed return it to SRS with your itemized bills. The Manager of Insurance & Claims at SRS will then sign the form and submit it to Association Insurance Management.
Personal Vehicles Used for Official University Business
In New Mexico, insurance carried on a vehicle by the owner is the primary coverage. Therefore, the employee's personal vehicle insurance would apply in the event of an accident, even if the vehicle is used for official University of New Mexico business. Many insurance policies exclude work related activities from coverage. Therefore, it is important that any employee using his/her personal vehicle in the scope of work check with his/her insurance agent to confirm coverage limits.
University Policy #4030 states that "use of a personal automobile for official University business will be reimbursed at the standard mileage rate published annually by the University Controller. … The rate is intended to cover all costs associated with owning the automobile, including gasoline, maintenance and repairs, insurance, etc... Mileage reimbursement may be allowed for the use of a personal automobile while on University business within the local area, excluding mileage normally associated with commuting from the residence to the place of employment..."
