As the state’s top research university, The University of New Mexico is home to some of the most cutting edge research. Associated with such research activities are potential occupational and environmental hazards, such as exposure to hazardous chemicals, chemical releases, electric shocks, lab explosions and exposures to high energy waves. These hazards must be anticipated, identified, prevented and mitigated, in a manner that is compliant with applicable federal, state and local regulatory schemes.

The Department of Safety and Risk Services at the University of New Mexico has developed two collaborative committees to help ensure that risk concerns within the university system are heard and addressed.

At the University of New Mexico, these risks run the gamut from the meticulous management of thousands of hazardous materials and chemicals in research laboratories, to insuring against lightning strike damages at UNM golf courses. The Department of Safety & Risk Services (SRS) manages the unique risks of each department at UNM.
